On January 3rd, 1903, a thirteen year old Adolf was devastated following death of his father. His family, though, was left relatively well off. Adolf was sent to a boys boarding school where he would spend the week, returning home to his mother on the weekends. He was known by his teachers as quiet, awkward, and generally bad behaved, which was evident in his grades.
Hitler's anti-semitism developed when he moved to Vienna in 1905. He was noted by his roommate, August Kubizek, to have a very unstable personality. Hitler would often act normal but was prone to sudden outbursts when tested. Kubizek also claims that Hitler would catch random bursts of inspiration always to be followed up by incompletion. Hitler was also said by his roommate to have been an anti-Semite before they had left their hometown of Linz, Austria. Vienna had a large Jewish community, many orthodox, but was widely known display racial tensions. Hitler claims in Mein Kampf that his anti-semitism was sparked when he saw an orthodox Jew. Hitler also had a strong admiration for Karl Lueger, the city's mayor and a known anti-semite.
